This process gradually reveals the secrets buried on Ash Twin while simultaneously making the Ember Twin cave. One example is the paired Ash Twin and Ember Twin planets orbiting so close to each other that sand from Ash Twin is funneled over to cover Ember Twin during the loop. Some events and locations change during the course of the time loop, which mean that areas and puzzles are often only accessible at certain times. All areas of the game are technically immediately accessible to the player upon acquiring the ship launch codes, however many areas are protected by logic puzzles which can often only be solved through learning more of the Nomai and speaking to fellow space explorers. The central premise of the game is exploration, with the player compelled to uncover the remains of the Nomai civilization to uncover the cause of the time loop and complete the game. Once the player has done this once, that information will not change in subsequent loops, which allows the player to bypass the observatory and immediately launch the ship with the known codes. For example, in order to use the ship, the player must walk to a local observatory, where the launch codes are located. In the first part of the game, the player links with an ancient Nomai statue which ensures that the player retains information discovered in each time loop when it restarts. Thus, the player is encouraged to learn why by exploring the solar system and uncovering secrets of an extinct alien race known as the Nomai, who previously visited the solar system thousands of years ago. Outer Wilds features an unnamed astronaut player character exploring a solar system that is stuck in a 22-minute time loop, resetting after the star goes supernova. The latter will eventually contract and then explode into a supernova, engulfing everything in its path and precipitating the player’s death and his return to the start of the game. If he does not die sooner, the player will be able to see that the sun is turning into a red giant. In addition, music and sounds play an important role in the game, even if it is not central. The game manipulates several complex concepts, with which the player must become familiar to arrive at the solution: the orbits of the planets around the star, and of the moons around the planets, the quantum effects of probability of presence, the inertia of the objects in zero gravity, etc. If oxygen runs out and the atmosphere is not breathable, the player dies and reappears at the starting camp. If fuel runs out, the suit will use oxygen to propel itself. The player has a limited amount of oxygen and fuel that he can replenish inside his rocket or by finding other sources during an exploration. Outside of his ship, the player can don a spacesuit equipped with a reserve of oxygen and fuel used to power his thrusters. By visiting the stars of this system at different times, he will be able to learn more about the origin and disappearance of the Nomai. The player can then only explore the system during these 22 minutes, using information he may have found during his previous expeditions. Use a variety of unique gadgets to probe your surroundings, track down mysterious signals, decipher ancient alien writing, and roast the perfect marshmallow. Strap on your hiking boots, check your oxygen levels, and get ready to venture into space. Visit an underground city of before it’s swallowed by sand, or explore the surface of a planet as it crumbles beneath your feet.
